Orthodox

The word orthodoxy, from the Greek ortho ('right', 'correct') and doxa ('thought', 'teaching', 'glorification'), is typically used to refer to the correct worship or the correct theological and doctrinal observance of religion, or other forms of intellectual activity shared by organizations or movements, as determined by some overseeing body. The term did not conventionally exist with any degree of formality (in the sense in which it is now used) prior to the advent of Christianity in the Greek-speaking world, though the word does occasionally show up in ancient literature in other, somewhat similar contexts. Orthodoxy is opposed to heterodoxy ('other teaching'), heresy and schism. People who deviate from orthodoxy by professing a doctrine considered to be false are most often called heretics, while those who deviate from orthodoxy by removing themselves from the perceived body of believers, i.e. from full communion, are called schismatics. Sometimes these occur together. The distinction in terminology pertains to the subject matter; if one is addressing corporate unity, the emphasis may be on schism; if one is addressing doctrinal coherence, the emphasis may be on heresy.

Orthodoxe Kirchen (von griech. ορθός „richtig, geradlinig“, und δόξα Verehrung oder δοκείν „Glaube“, d. h. die richtige Verehrung oder rechte Lehre  Gottes, im Slawischen pravoslavnaja cerkov „Verehrung“) nennen sich die christlichen Kirchen des byzantinischen Ritus, die im griechischen Kulturraum entstanden oder von dorther gegründet worden sind. Davon zu unterscheiden sind die so genannten Altorientalischen Kirchen, die zusammen mit den orthodoxen Kirchen und den mit Rom unierten Kirchen östlicher Riten als Ostkirchen bezeichnet werden. Orthodoxie (von griech.  orthós „richtig, geradlinig“ und dóxa „Lehre, (Gottes-)Verehrung“, also 'Rechtgläubigkeit') bezeichnet allgemein eine Interpretation einer Lehre, die sich stark an die ursprüngliche Interpretation hält und sich flexiblen Weiterentwicklungen und Anpassungen an veränderte Verhältnisse verweigert.

Het woord orthodoxie (van het Grieks: ὀρθός, orthos, recht en δόξα, doxa, mening, glorie) betekent letterlijk 'juiste aanbidding' en 'juiste leer'. Synoniem: rechtzinnig.In de loop van de eeuwen heeft het woord orthodoxie twee betekenissen gekregen.Enerzijds kan het toegepast worden op elke naam van een bepaalde religie of ideologie. In zo'n geval betekent het dat de aangeduide persoon of groep vasthoudt aan de traditie van de eerder genoemde stroming. Dit dan in tegenstelling tot de vrijzinnigen.In de christelijke traditie is het zowel de omschrijving van de Oosters-orthodoxe Kerken als een aanduiding die aan de eerste beschrijving beantwoordt.

Nota: En relación con el término con que es conocida una de las iglesias o comunidades cristianas véase Iglesia Ortodoxa. Etimológicamente, del griego όρθός orthós (correcto) y δόξα dóxa (opinión), esto es, la opinión recta y verdadera y, consecuentemente, es ortodoxia la doctrina o ideología que es sostenida y defendida por la mayor parte de una sociedad, especialmente en el terreno religioso, en contraposición a la heterodoxia, u doctrina sostenida por un grupo menor o grupos menores que no comparten tal doctrina o se muestran disidentes de la misma.
