The organ (from Greek όργανον organon, "organ, instrument, tool"), is a keyboard instrument of one or more divisions, each played with its own keyboard operated either with the hands or with the feet. The organ is a relatively old musical instrument in the Western musical tradition, dating from the time of Ctesibius of Alexandria who is credited with the invention of the hydraulis. By around the 8th century it had overcome early associations with gladiatorial combat and gradually assumed a prominent place in the liturgy of the Catholic Church; subsequently it has re-emerged as a secular and recital instrument.

The organ repertoire consists of music written for the  organ. Because it is one of the oldest musical instruments in existence, written organ repertoire spans a time period almost as long as that of written music itself. The organ's solo repertoire is among the largest for any musical instrument. Because the organ was found almost exclusively in the western churches from the Middle Ages until the emergence in the Romantic era of large concert hall instruments, a significant portion of organ repertoire is sacred in nature. Thus, most organ music comes from Western Europe and North America; because the eastern religions (such as the Eastern Orthodox Church) did not use any instruments in their worship. Owing to the age of the instrument and its frequent use in Western worship, the organ has one of the most varied repertoires of any instrument.

Die Orgel (griechisch  órganon „Werkzeug, Instrument, Organ“) ist ein über Tasten spielbares Musikinstrument. Der Klang wird durch Pfeifen erzeugt, die durch einen Orgelwind genannten Luftstrom angeblasen werden. Zur Abgrenzung gegenüber elektronischen Orgeln wird sie daher auch Pfeifenorgel genannt. Sie gehört zu den Aerophonen. Die meisten Orgeln enthalten mehrheitlich Labialpfeifen, bei denen die Luftsäule im Innern durch Anblasen eines Labiums (Schneidentöne) zum Schwingen gebracht und damit der Ton erzeugt wird. Sie werden durch Lingualpfeifen ergänzt, bei denen die Tonerzeugung durch ein schwingendes Zungenblatt erfolgt.

Orgelmusik ist Musik, die speziell für die Orgel geschrieben wurde.

Les rapports de la musique d'orgue et de l'instrument auquel elle est destinée se sont développés à chaque époque de leur histoire à peu près de la même façon. La musique progresse en dehors de l'orgue, volontiers archaïsant ; les organistes improvisateurs s'efforcent de transposer la nouvelle musique sur leur vieil instrument tout en demandant aux facteurs de nouvelles ressources ; ceux-ci répondent plus ou moins vite et proposent, après des tâtonnements et des inventions, un nouveau type d'orgue sur lequel on improvise longtemps encore tout en écrivant une musique à l'ancienne mode ; enfin apparaît une musique d'orgue écrite appropriée au nouveau type. Mais à ce moment, un nouveau cycle est déjà en route.

Orgel är ett blåsinstrument med pipor ordnade i stämmor och med mekanisk lufttillförsel, spelat från en eller flera klaviaturer och således även ett tangentinstrument. Människor som inte till vardags är mer vana vid elorglar och liknande elektrofoner brukar också kalla instrumentet orgel, däribland alla som yrkesmässigt har att göra med instrumentet. Det bruket kommer även att följas i den här artikeln, utom där en historisk framställning kan bli tydligare av en precisering. Ibland hör man benämningen kyrkorgel, men den är oriktig för instrumentet som sådant, eftersom det finns både (pip-)orglar som inte står i kyrkor och orgelmusik som inte, eller inte nödvändigtvis, är kyrklig.

Organy piszczałkowe są największym instrumentem nieporównywalnym z żadnym innym, jaki został wymyślony, pod względem rozmiarów przestrzennych, ilości źródeł fal dźwiękowych, sumarycznej mocy emitowanej do otoczenia, dynamiki i bardzo często różnorodności barw i możliwości kolorystycznych. Przewyższają nawet w wielu aspektach orkiestrę symfoniczną, chociaż na organach gra tylko jeden człowiek. Rozpiętość skali dźwięków dużych organów wynosi ok. 10 oktaw, co jest równe pełnemu zakresowi wysokości dźwięków odbieranych przez słuch ludzki (od 16Hz do ok. 20 000 Hz). O organach mówimy, kiedy instrument posiada trzy zasadnicze cechy:

• dźwięk jest tworzony poprzez powietrze przepływające przez piszczałki pogrupowane w głosy
• instrument posiada trakturę
• instrument posiada miech
