Order of Merit (Commonwealth)

The Order of Merit is a British and Commonwealth Order bestowed by the Monarch. It was established in 1902 by King Edward VII (based on the Prussian Pour le Mérite) as a reward for distinguished service in the armed forces, science, art, literature, or for the promotion of culture. The rarer military awards are distinguished from the civil by having a pair of crossed swords behind the central medallion. Appointments to the Order are in the Sovereign's personal gift and ministerial advice is not required. The Order of Merit is a very high honour; it lies outside the traditional system of honours which confer titles but is arguably the most prestigious honour which is still in regular use.

L’Ordine al Merito (ingl. Order of Merit) è un’onorificenza conferita dal sovrano del Regno Unito che si estende anche ai Paesi del Commonwealth. Fu istituito nel 1902 da Edoardo VII, sul modello dell’analogo Ordine prussiano, come riconoscimento per meriti speciali nel campo scientifico, artistico, letterario, militare e culturale. Le medaglie riconosciute per il valore militare si differenziarono dalle altre per un paio di spade incrociate dietro alla medaglia centrale.

A Order of Merit é uma condecoração britânica e do Commonwealth outorgada pelo monarca. Ela foi estabelecida em 1902 pelo rei Edward VII (baseada na ordem Pour le Mérite prussiana) como uma recompensa por serviços extraordinários nas Forças Armadas, Ciência, Arte, Literatura ou pela promoção da Cultura. As raras recompensas militares foram distinguidas das civis por um par de espadas cruzadas por trás do medalhão central. Indicações para a Ordem são exclusividade do soberano, e consulta ministerial não é necessária. A Order of Merit é uma honraria muito prestigiosa; situa-se fora do sistema tradicional de honrarias que confere títulos mas é a mais prestigiada honra que ainda tem uso regular.

Создан, по аналогии с прусским Pour le Mérite). Членство в ордене предоставляется как награда за выдающуюся службу в вооруженных силах или за особый вклад в развитие науки, искусства, литературы, культуры. Вид отличительного знака, присваемого в качестве военной награды, отличается от гражданского парой скрещенных мечей за центральным медальоном. Назначения в орден — личное решение его главы без необходимости совещаний с советом ордена.
