Ophiuchus

Ophiuchus (Οφιούχος ), formerly referred to as Serpentarius , the former originating in Greek and the latter in Latin, both meaning "serpent-holder," is one of the 88 constellations and was also one of the 48 listed by Ptolemy. It is a large constellation located around the celestial equator between Aquila, Serpens and Hercules, northwest of the center of the Milky Way. The southern part lies between Scorpius to the west and Sagittarius to the east. Of the 13 zodiacal constellations (constellations that contain the Sun during the course of the year), Ophiuchus is the only one not counted as an astrological sign.

Wężownik (łac. Ophiuchus, dop. Ophiuchi, skrót Oph) to wyraźny gwiazdozbiór znajdujący się w rejonie równika niebieskiego. Jest jedną z 48 konstelacji ptolemejskich. Przedstawia on Asklepiosa, dzierżącego węża. Wąż ten jest oddzielnym gwiazdozbiorem, rozdzielonym na dwie części, Głowę Węża oraz Ogon Węża, właśnie przez gwiazdozbiór Wężownika.Mimo że przez obszar gwiazdozbioru przebiega ekliptyka, Wężownika nie zalicza się do gwiazdozbiorów zodiakalnych. Jest tak dlatego, że granice tego gwiazdozbioru przecinają ekliptykę od stosunkowo niedługiego czasu – od standaryzacji gwiazdozbiorów w roku 1930.

Ofiuco (in latino Ophiuchus, colui che porta il serpente, serpentario o Οφιούχος in greco) è una delle 88 moderne costellazioni, ed è anche una delle 48 costellazioni originarie menzionate da Tolomeo. Delle 13 costellazioni dello zodiaco moderno (quelle che si trovano sull'eclittica), Ofiuco è l'unica che non ha dato il nome ad un segno astrologico.
