The compound eyes of insects, mantis shrimp and millipedes are composed of units called ommatidia (singular: ommatidium). An ommatidium contains a cluster of photoreceptor cells surrounded by support cells and pigment cells. The outer part of the ommatidium is overlaid with a transparent cornea. Each ommatidium is innervated by one axon and thus provides the brain with one picture element. The brain forms an image from these independent picture elements. The number of ommatidia in the eye depends upon the type of insect and ranges from just a handful in the primitive Archaeognatha and Thysanura to around 30 thousand in larger Anisoptera dragonflies and in some Sphingidae among moths.

Ommatidien (von spätgriech. ommatidion = „Äugelchen“) sind die Einzelaugen, aus denen die Facettenaugen der Gliederfüßer, darunter die Insekten und Krebstiere, zusammengesetzt sind. Je nach Art besteht ein Facettenauge aus nur einzelnen bis vielen Tausend Ommatidien, bei den Libellen zum Beispiel aus bis zu 20.000 Einzelaugen.

Un œil composé, ou œil à facettes, est constitué d'un ensemble de récepteurs sensibles à la lumière qui sont appelés des ommatidies. Il s'agit en général d'un attribut des arthropodes. Chez les crustacés, l'œil composé peut être pédonculé (crabes) alors que celui des insectes ne l'est jamais.

Ommatidium (fasetka) - podstawowy element budowy oka złożonego  stawonoga. Zbudowany jest on z soczewki (pochodzenia oskórkowego), stożka skupiającego światło (który może być płynny lub krystaliczny), komórek wzrokowych i komórek pigmentowych. W oku złożonym pojedyncze ommatidy znajdują się blisko siebie, a ich soczewki składają się na główną jego powierzchnię.

O olho composto de um insecto é formado por centenas de unidades denominadas omatídeos. O omatídeo possui um conjunto de células fotoreceptoras rodeadas por células de suporte (células pigmentares). A parte exterior do omatídeo contém uma camada transparente, denominada córnea.
