Olympiade

An Olympiad is a period of four years, associated with the Olympic Games of Classical Greece. In the Hellenistic period, beginning with Ephorus, Olympiads were used as a calendar epoch. In this reckoning, the first Olympiad lasted from the summer of 776 BC to that of 772 BC. By extrapolation, the year of the th Olympiad begins in summer 2008.

Die Olympiade ist der Zeitraum zwischen zwei Olympischen Spielen.Als Olympiade (v. griech. Olymp) wurde im antiken Griechenland ein vierjähriger Zeitraum bezeichnet, der mit den Olympischen Spielen begann und an dessen Ende sich die nächsten Spiele anschlossen. Die erste Olympiade bezeichnet demnach die vier Jahre ab 776 v.Chr., da in diesem Jahr die griechische Zeitrechnung einsetzt. Seit diesem Jahr sind die Spiele auch historisch belegt, haben ihre Anfänge aber viel früher.

Olimpiada - okres pomiędzy dwoma następującymi po sobie igrzyskami. Zazwyczaj mierzył około 4 lat. Co tyle lat odbywały się starożytne igrzyska w Olimpii i właśnie stąd wywodzi się nazwa tego okresu. Olimpiada była często wykorzystywana w starożytności (a także później) jako jednostka chronologiczna lub odnośnik w chronologii. Najbardziej znany zapis za pomocą olimpiady dotyczy założenia Rzymu. Miało się to odbyć wedle Warrona w "trzecim roku VI Olimpiady". Z czasem słowo olimpiada straciło swoje dawne znaczenie i wyrównało się pojęciowo z "igrzyskiem". W dzisiejszych czasach nawet częściej możemy spotkać olimpiadę na miejscu, gdzie bardziej uprawnione w użyciu wydawałoby się być "igrzysko".

Een Olympiade is een periode in de Griekse oudheid van 4 jaar, waarin men vroeger zich voorbereidde op de Olympische spelen. De oude Olympische Spelen begonnen in 776 voor Christus, werden om de 4 jaar gehouden en met een olympiade werd de periode tussen de spelen aangeduid. Onderandere oude kroniekschrijvers probeerden gebeurtenissen aan de hand hiervan te dateren. Tegenwoordig worden die spelen geassocieerd met de Olympische Spelen. Tegenwoordig start een Olympiade op 1 januari van het jaar waarop de Olympische Zomerspelen wordt gehouden. De eerste moderne Olympiade begon in 1896, de tweede in 1900, enz. De negenentwintigste Olympiade zal starten in 2008.
