Old Dam

Originally built by the British between 1898 and 1902, the Old Dam was enlarged twice in the early part of this century. However it proved insufficient for Egypt's perceived needs, and the High Dam project was undertaken. The Old Dam had to be opened annually to allow the flood waters of the Nile through. This allowed Philae Temple t o be visited, before it disappeared again under the artificial lake formed when the dam was closed.
