Got off to a wonderful start to his international career, scoring four goals in only his second game for the national team against San Marino in November 1996. He also started off impressively in the Euro 2000 qualifiers, scoring twice in the 3-0 victory over Northern Ireland in September 1998. However, he has since suffered a loss of form. Previously a perfect foil to Hakan Sükür with his strong running and work-rate, he only played a further five minutes after starting the first four Euro 2000 qualifying matches.
