Oceanus
Oceanus (
Greek , Okeanos) was believed to be the
world-ocean in
classical antiquity, which the
ancient Romans and
Greeks considered to be an enormous
river encircling the world. Strictly speaking, Okeanos was the
ocean-stream at the
Equator in which floated the habitable
hemisphere (oikoumene). In
Greek mythology, this world-ocean was personified as a
Titan, a son of
Uranus and
Gaia. In Hellenistic and Roman mosaics, this Titan was often depicted as having the upper body of a muscular man with a long beard and horns, and the lower torso of a
serpent (cf.
Typhon). On a fragmentary archaic vessel (British Museum 1971.11-1.1) of ca 580 BCE, among the gods arriving at the wedding of
Peleus and the sea-nymph
Thetis, is a fish-tailed Oceanus, with a fish in one hand and a serpent in the other, gifts of bounty and prophecy. In Roman mosaics he might carry a steering-oar and cradle a ship.

grec ancien / Ôkeanós) est un
Titan, fils d'
Ouranos (le Ciel) et de
Gaïa (la Terre), frère et époux de
Téthys. Ses fils sont les
dieux fleuves et ses filles les
Océanides (6000 en tout). Plusieurs sources établies le font en outre engendrer
Triptolème avec sa propre mère
Gaïa (
Phérécyde fr. ;
Musée fr. ;
pseudo-Apollodore, I, 32 ;
Pausanias I, 14, 3) et les
Cercopes avec sa fille
Théia, distincte de la
Titanide du même nom (

Oceano (mitologia)
Oceano è una figura della
mitologia greca, era un
titano figlio di
Urano e di
Gea. Omero chiama Oceano l'origine degli dei e l'origine di tutto; egli era una divinità fluviale e con lo stesso nome veniva designato il fiume (o corso d'acqua) e nello stesso tempo il dio, ciò che del resto si usava fare anche per le altre divinità fluviali. Oceano aveva un'inesauribile potenza generatrice, non diversamente dai nostri fiumi, nelle cui acqua si bagnavano le fanciulle greche prima delle nozze, e che perciò erano considerati come i capostipiti di antiche famiglie. Oceano però non era un dio fluviale comune, perché il suo non era un fiume comune. Quando tutto aveva avuto già origine da lui, esso continuò a scorrere agli estremi margini della terra, rifluendo in sé stesso, in un circolo ininterrotto. I fiumi, i torrenti e le sorgenti, anzi il mare stesso, continuavano a scaturire dal suo corso vasto e potente. Anche quando il mondo stava già sotto il dominio di Zeus, egli solo poté rimanere al suo posto primitivo che in realtà non era un luogo, ma solo una corrente, delimitazione e separazione dell'al di là.
