In chemistry, an alcohol is any organic compound in which a hydroxyl group (-OH) is bound to a carbon atom of an alkyl or substituted alkyl group. The general formula for a simple acyclic alcohol is CnH2n+1OH. In layman's terms, the word alcohol (, "al-kuḥl") usually refers to ethanol, also known as grain alcohol or (older) spirits of wine, or to any alcoholic beverage. Ethanol is a colorless, volatile liquid with a mild odor which can be obtained by the fermentation of sugars. (Industrially, it is more commonly obtained by ethylene hydration — the reaction of  ethylene with water in the presence of phosphoric acid.) Ethanol is the most widely used depressant in the world, and has been for thousands of years. This sense underlies the term alcoholism (addiction to alcohol).

En chimie organique, un alcool est un composé organique dont l'un des carbones est lié à un groupement hydroxyle (-OH). L'éthanol (ou alcool éthylique) entrant dans la composition des boissons alcoolisées est un cas particulier d'alcool, mais tous les alcools ne sont pas propres à la consommation. En particulier, le méthanol est toxique et mortel à haute dose.

L'hydroxyde est l'anion HO- ; il est anciennement noté OH-, mais la première écriture permet de mettre en évidence le fait que la charge négative est portée par l'oxygène. Chimiquement, c'est une base mais aussi un nucléophile. Son caractère basique se mesure par une constante d'équilibre tandis que sa nucléophilie se mesure par une constante de vitesse.

Das Hydroxidion ist ein negativ geladenes Ion, das entsteht, wenn Basen mit Wasser reagieren. Seine chemische Formel lautet OH-.Eine allgemeine Base B reagiert nach folgendem Schema mit Wasser:Anhand der Konzentration der Hydroxidionen kann man den pH-Wert der entstandenen Lösung ermitteln. Dazu berechnet man erst den so genannten pOH-Wert.

Die Österreichische Hochschülerinnen- und Hochschülerschaft (ÖH) ist die gesetzliche Vertretung der Studierenden der österreichischen Fachhochschulen, Pädagogischen Hochschulen und Universitäten. Alkohole - związki organiczne zawierające jedną lub więcej grup hydroksylowych połączonych z atomem węgla w hybrydyzacji sp3. W języku potocznym przez "alkohol" rozumie się zazwyczaj alkohol etylowy (etanol), a napoje alkoholowe to napoje zawierające właśnie ten alkohol. Najprostsze i najczęściej spotykane w życiu codziennym alkohole, to monohydroksylowe (zawierające jedną grupę hydroksylową w cząsteczce) pochodne alkanów o wzorze ogólnym CnH2n+1OH, noszące nazwę alkanole (m.in. metanol, etanol, propanol).

W chemii nieorganicznej grupa hydroksylowa jest często nazywana wodorotlenową i występuje ona w zasadach i hydroksysolach, związana z jonem metalu wiązaniem jonowym.
