Off-line (editing)

A decision-making process using low-cost equipment usually to produce an EDL or a rough cut which can then be conformed or referred to in a high quality on-line suite--so reducing decision-making time in the more expensive on-line environment. While most off-line suites enable shot selection and the defining of transitions such as cuts and dissolves, very few allow settings for the DVEs, color correctors, keyers and layering that are increasingly a part of the on-line editing process.
