Oahu

Oahu (usually Oahu outside Hawaiian and Hawaiian English), the "Gathering Place", is the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands and most populous of the islands in the State of Hawaii. Including small close-in offshore islands such as Ford Island and the islands in Kaneohe Bay and off the eastern coast, it has a total land area of 1,545.3 km² (596.7 mile²). In greatest dimension, this volcanic island is 71 km (44 mi) long and 48 km (30 mi) across. The length of the shoreline is 366 km (227 mi). The island is the result of two separate shield volcanoes: Waianae and Koolau, with a broad "valley" or saddle (the central Oahu Plain) between them. The highest point is Mt. Kaala in the Waianae Range, rising to 1,220 m (4,003 ft) above sea level.

L'isola di Oahu (in hawaiiano O'ahu) è l'isola delle Hawaii su cui si trovano la capitale, Honolulu, Pearl Harbor, e più della metà della popolazione dello stato - circa 900 mila abitanti.Oahu ha una superficie di 1,600 km², terza (dopo Maui e l'isola di Hawaii) delle isole hawaiiane. È un'isola di origine vulcanica, originariamente formata da due vulcani, Wai'anae (a ovest) e Ko'olau (a est), i cui resti adesso formano le due catene principali di montagne a Oahu. Le due catene montuose sono collegate da un pianoro centrale, dove si trovano due paesi (Mililani e Wahiawa) e una base militare (Schofield Barracks) oltre a grandi campi di ananas.

Het heeft een kustlijn van 366 km.Zo'n 80% van de bevolking van de staat Hawaï woont op Oahu. Ook de grootste stad en hoofdstad Honolulu is er gelegen.De belangrijkste economische sector voor Oahu is het toerisme, met hotels geconcentreerd rond Waikiki, een wijk van Honolulu. Het eiland wordt veel bezocht door toeristen van het vasteland van de Verenigde Staten en uit Canada en Japan.
