Une Original Video Animation (souvent abrégée en OVA, traduction littérale : animation vidéo originale) est une production d'animation de différents formats, court-métrage, moyen métrage ou long-métrage destiné à l'exploitation sur support vidéo (VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-Ray Disc, ...) sans diffusion télévisuelle ni cinématographique préalable. Ce terme est surtout employé pour désigner les dessins animés japonais, les Américains préférant le terme direct-to-video. Contrairement à certaines idées, les Direct-to-video ne sont pas des productions diminuées à qui l'on a refusé l'exploitation en salle. Les films sont produits pour un public souvent minoritaire aux goûts particuliers. L'exploitation sur support permet d'aligner avec précision les frais de commercialisation.

Als Original Video Animation (kurz OVA, früher auch OAV) werden Anime (japanische Trickfilme) bezeichnet, die im Gegensatz zu Kinofilmen und Fernsehserien von vornherein ausschließlich zur Veröffentlichung auf DVD und/oder Video produziert werden. OVAs sind in vielen Fällen Serien mit geringer Folgenzahl oder Einzelfilme und können die Fortsetzung zu einer Fernsehproduktion bilden, aber auch eigenständige Projekte sein.

Obecnie pojawiają się głównie na DVD, historycznie pojawiały się na LD i VHS. Typowa seria OVA składa się z 6 epizodów po ok. 30 min. każdy. Nie jest to jednak żelazna zasada i można spotkać się z produkcjami liczącymi od jednego epizodu w górę. Podobnie długość samych epizodów może być różna. Poszczególne odcinki zazwyczaj nie pojawiają się wszystkie na raz, a co pewien czas pojawia się nowy nośnik z kolejnym epizodem.

Original Anime Video (OAV), letteralmente "Anime Originale per il Video", detto anche Original Video Anime (o Animation) (OVA), designa in Giappone produzioni anime rilasciate direttamente per il mercato home video senza prima essere trasmesse in televisione o nei cinema. In generale gli OAV tendono ad essere di elevata qualità, paragonabile a quella dei film, e la trama si sviluppa nel corso degli episodi. Più di recente in Giappone, in luogo di OAV, si preferisce usare l'equivalente OVA, poiché l'OAV viene spesso inteso come Original Adult Video anziché Original Anime Video (cioè come video per adulti, anziché d'animazione).
