The Open Systems Interconnection Basic Reference Model (OSI Reference Model or OSI Model for short) is a layered, abstract description for communications and computer network protocol design, developed as part of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) initiative. It is also called the OSI seven layer model. The layers, described below, are, from top to bottom, Application, Presentation, Session, Transport, Network, Data Link, and Physical. A layer is a collection of related functions that provides services to the layer above it and receives service from the layer below it. For example, a layer that provides error-free communications across a network provides the path needed by applications above it, while it calls the next lower layer to send and receive packets that make up the contents of the path.

Le modèle OSI (de l'anglais , « Interconnexion de systèmes ouverts ») d'interconnexion en réseau des systèmes ouverts est un modèle de communications entre ordinateurs proposé par l'ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation). OSI (ang. Open System Interconnection) lub Model OSI (pełna nazwa ISO OSI RM, ang. ISO OSI Reference Model - model odniesienia łączenia systemów otwartych) - standard zdefiniowany przez  ISO oraz ITU-T opisujący strukturę komunikacji sieciowej. Model ISO OSI RM jest traktowany jako model odniesienia (wzorzec) dla większości rodzin protokołów komunikacyjnych. Podstawowym założeniem modelu jest podział systemów sieciowych na 7 warstw (ang. layers) współpracujących ze sobą w ściśle określony sposób. Dla Internetu sformułowano uproszczony Model TCP/IP, który ma tylko 4 warstwy.

Het OSI-model (of ISO-OSI) is de benaming voor ISO Reference Model for Open Systems Interconnection.Het OSI-model is een gestandaardiseerd middel om te beschrijven hoe data wordt verstuurd over een netwerk. Het zorgt er voor dat er compatibiliteit en interoperabiliteit is tussen de verschillende types van netwerktechnologieën van organisaties over de hele wereld. Dit model deelt de communicatie in in zeven lagen. Daarom wordt dit ook wel het Zevenlagenmodel genoemd. De lagen zijn, van hoog naar laag: Toepassing, Presentatie, Sessie, Transport, Netwerk, Datalink en Fysiek.

Сетевая модель ВОС (модель взаимосвязи открытых систем — ) — абстрактная модель для сетевых коммуникаций и разработки сетевых протоколов. Представляет уровневый подход к сети. Каждый уровень обслуживает свою часть процесса взаимодействия. Благодаря такой структуре совместная работа сетевого оборудования и программного обеспечения становится гораздо проще и понятнее.
