ORCA

The Orca or Killer Whale (Orcinus orca), less commonly, Blackfish or Seawolf, is the largest species of the oceanic dolphin family (Delphinidae). It is found in all the world's oceans, from the frigid Arctic and Antarctic regions to warm, tropical seas.Orcas are versatile and opportunistic predators. Some populations feed mostly on fish, and other populations hunt marine mammals, including sea lions, seals, and even large whales. There are up to five distinct Orca types, some of which may be separate subspecies or even species. Orcas are highly social; some populations are composed of matrilineal family groups which are the most stable of any animal species. The sophisticated social behaviour, hunting techniques, and vocal behaviour of Orcas have been described as manifestations of culture.

Orka (Orcinus orca) - waleń z podrzędu zębowców, rodziny delfinów oceanicznych (Delphinidae). Duże, charakterystycznie ubarwione zwierzę o silnie rozwiniętej płetwie grzbietowej (zwłaszcza u samców, u których dochodzi ona do 1,8 m) i długich, zaokrąglonych, wiosłowatych płetwach piersiowych (u samców powierzchnia płetwy znacznie większa) - wykazuje więc duży dymorfizm płciowy. Największy przedstawiciel delfinowatych, jedyny przedstawiciel rodzaju Orcinus Fitzinger, 1860. Grzbiet czarny, jedynie za okiem biała plama i biaława plama za płetwą grzbietową. Spód ciała biały, połączony z białą łatą na boku. W szczęce i żuchwie 10-13 zębów. Uzębienie wtórnie homodontyczne.

L'orca (Orcinus orca) è un mammifero marino appartenente alla famiglia dei Delfinidi (Cetacei Odontoceti). Il distacco filogenetico in una specie autonoma è avvenuto per i tassonomisti circa 5 milioni di anni fa. Il nome "Orca" è stato dato a questi animali dagli antichi Romani, che a loro volta l'hanno mutuato dal greco ὄρυξ, che si riferisce genericamente a balene, grandi pesci o mostri marini. L'aggettivo Orcino significa invece demone proveniente dall'inferno: Orco per i Romani era un dio sotterraneo. In inglese l'animale è chiamato killer whale, vale a dire balena assassina (sottinteso di altre balene).
