ONGE

The Onge (also Önge, Ongee) are one of the Andamanese indigenous peoples of the Andaman Islands, located in the Bay of Bengal. They are sometimes described as Negritos. They were formerly distributed across Little Andaman Island and the nearby islets, with some territory and camps established on Rutland Island and the southern tip of South Andaman Island. This semi-nomadic tribe used to be fully dependent on hunting and gathering for food. However, with their numbers now substantially reduced in the aftermath of colonisation and settlement (from 672 in 1901 to barely 100), the 97 surviving members are confined to two reserve camps on Little Andaman.

Die Onge sind eine Ethnie auf den Andamanen.Bis zur Flutkatastrophe in Südostasien zählte die Gemeinschaft der Onge 98 Mitglieder, die auf der Insel Little Andaman leben. Mindestens 73 haben die Flut überlebt.Die Onge sind klein, sehr dunkelhäutig und kraushaarig (Negritos). Traditionell leben sie als Jäger und Sammler in den tropischen Regenwäldern. Sie machen mit Pfeil und Bogen Jagd auf Wildschweine, Reptilien und Vögel. Mit Netzen fangen sie Fische, Krebse und Garnelen im seichten Wasser der Flüsse und dem küstennahen Meer. Darüberhinaus sammeln sie Früchte und andere Pflanzenteile.

El Önge es una lengua en grave peligro de extinción de las islas Andamán, en la India. Pertenece al grupo sur de lenguas andamanesas. Actualmente, sólo quedan 96 personas que lo sepan hablar. La mayor parte de los hablantes es monolingüe en Önge. La pervivencia de este idioma, al igual que la del otro idioma del grupo sur, el Järawa se ha sustentado en base al aislamiento de las poblaciones que lo hablan. Es una de las pocas lenguas de Andamán que aún no ha sucumbido al Hindi.
