Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric anxiety disorder most commonly characterized by a subject's obsessive, distressing, intrusive thoughts and related compulsions (tasks or "rituals") which attempt to neutralize the obsessions.The phrase "obsessive-compulsive" has worked its way into the wider English lexicon, and is often used in an offhand manner to describe someone who is meticulous or absorbed in a cause (see also "anal-retentive"). Such casual references should not be confused with obsessive-compulsive disorder; see clinomorphism. It is also important to distinguish OCD from other types of anxiety, including the routine tension and stress that appear throughout life. Although these signs are often present in OCD, a person who shows signs of infatuation or fixation with a subject/object, or displays traits such as perfectionism, does not necessarily have OCD, a specific and well-defined condition.

Le trouble obsessionnel compulsif (abrégé en TOC) est un trouble anxieux se manifestant notamment par la survenue chez une personne de compulsions ou la mise en place de rituels afin de limiter l'impact de l'anxiété générée par une obsession ou une phobie. Zwangsstörungen sind psychische Störungen, bei denen sich den Patienten Gedanken und Handlungen aufdrängen, die zwar als quälend empfunden werden, aber dennoch umgesetzt werden müssen. Es besteht zumindest zeitweise Einsicht, dass die Zwangsgedanken oder -handlungen übertrieben sind. Durch die Störung ergeben sich deutliche Beeinträchtigungen des Alltagsleben oder Belastungen.

Zaburzenie obsesyjno-kompulsywne (ZOK, nerwica natręctw, angielska nazwa: OCD - skrót od obsessive-compulsive disorder) - zespół zachowań, w których pojawiają się myśli obsesyjne i natrętne, przymusowe (kompulsywne) ruchy i zachowania, niemal zawsze bardzo przykrych dla osoby przeżywającej je. Il disturbo ossessivo-compulsivo o DOC (in inglese obsessive-compulsive disorder o OCD), chiamato anche sindrome ossessivo-compulsiva o SOC (in inglese obsessive-compulsive syndrome o OCS) e prima dell'uscita del DSM-III-R conosciuto come "nevrosi/psiconevrosi ossessivo-compulsiva" o semplicemente come "nevrosi/psiconevrosi ossessiva" e in alcuni testi come "nevrosi/psiconevrosi ossessivo-coattiva" o "disturbo ossessivo-coattivo" o semplicemente "disturbo ossessivo"), è un disordine psichiatrico che si manifesta in una gran varietà di forme, ma è principalmente caratterizzato da pensieri ossessivi associati a compulsioni (azioni particolari o rituali da eseguire) che tentano di neutralizzare l'ossessione.
