OASIS

In geography, an oasis (plural: oases) is an isolated area of vegetation in a desert, typically surrounding a spring or similar water source. Oases also provide habitat for animals and even humans if the area is big enough. The location of oases has been of critical importance for trade and transportation routes in desert areas. Caravans must travel via oases so that supplies of water and food can be replenished. Thus, political or military control of an oasis has in many cases meant control of trade on a particular route. For example, the oases of Awjila, Ghadames and Kufra, situated in modern-day Libya, have at various times been vital to both North-South and East-West trade in the Sahara desert. The word oasis came into English via Greek ὄασις oasis, borrowed directly from Egyptian wḥ3t or Demotic wḥỉ. It was not borrowed from Coptic  ouaḥe (*/waħe/), as is sometimes suggested; the Greek word is attested several centuries before Coptic existed as a written language.

Oasis [] (engl. für Oase) ist eine englische Musikgruppe. Sie sind die erfolgreichsten Vertreter des Britpop und bekannt für die Skandale der Brüder Liam und Noel Gallagher. Die Band hat bis heute weltweit über 50 Mio. Alben verkauft und gilt als eine der wichtigsten Bands der 90er-Jahre.

Eine Oase [] (v. griech. óasis „bewohnter Ort“; aus dem Semitischen, altägyptisch waset „Kessel“) ist ein Vegetationsfleck in der Wüste, üblicherweise an einer Quelle, Wasserstelle oder Wadi gelegen. Oasen können in der Größe und im Charakter erheblich variieren, vom Kleinen, von Dattelpalmen umgebenen Teich bis hin zu ganzen Städten mit angesiedelten Industrie- und Landwirtschaftsbetrieben. Die traditionelle Wirtschaftsform, bei der verschiedene Kulturen kombiniert werden, ist die Oasenwirtschaft. Eine Sonderform zur Wassergewinnung sind die Qanate.

OASIS, Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards, to międzynarodowe  konsorcjum o charakterze non-profit, zajmujące się rozwojem standardów e-biznesu, w tym także standardów sieciowych. Konsorcjum powstało w 1993 roku pod nazwą SGML Open, w celu promocji języka SGML, zmiana nazwy nastąpiła w 1998 roku, aby odzwierciedlić poszerzenie obszaru działań organizacji. W skład OASIS wchodzi ponad 5 tysięcy podmiotów z ponad 100 krajów, w tym ponad 600 organizacji.

Oasis to angielska grupa rockowa z Manchesteru, przedstawiciel nurtu britpop.Zespół zyskał międzynarodową popularność w połowie lat 90. XX w., wykorzystując elementy przywodzące na myśl The Beatles, The Stone Roses, czy T. Rex w połączeniu z charakterystycznym brzmieniem gitarowym („ściana dźwięku”). Od początku istnienia skład zespołu ulegał częstym zmianom. Stałymi członkami zespołu pozostają bracia Liam i Noel Gallagher.

Oaza (od greckiej nazwy staroegipskiej miejscowości Oasis podanej przez Herodota) - teren o bardzo bujnej roślinności na obszarze pustyń i półpustyń. Występują one w miejscach, gdzie woda z rzek przenika do gruntu (oazy nadrzeczne) lub w miejscach, gdzie zwierciadło wody gruntowej znajduje się na takiej głębokości, że dosięgają je korzenie roślin.

In geografia, un'oasi è un area di vegetazione isolata in un deserto, che di solito circonda una sorgente o una simile fonte d'acqua naturaleIn realtà un oasi non è mai un fatto naturale. Per oasi infatti si intende tutto il complesso ecosistema formato da insediamento umano, palmeto, coltivazioni e spesso elaborati sistemi di captazione e gestione idrica. Si tratta quindi di un paesaggio culturale in cui le palme da dattero sono piantate e meticolosamente coltivate e dove si arriva a volte a controllare anche gli stessi sistemi dunari creando dune artificiali protettive. Pietro Laureano in Sahara, giardino sconosciuto, Giunti, Firenze, 1988 dà questa definizione di oasi: "oasi è un insediamento umano che in condizioni geografiche aride usa le risorse disponibili localmente per creare una amplificazione di effetti positivi e determinare una nicchia vitale autostenibile e un ambiente fertile in contrasto con l'intorno sfavorevole".
