Numerical digit

In mathematics and computer science, a digit is a symbol (a number symbol, e.g. "3" or "7") used in numerals (combinations of symbols, e.g. "37"), to represent numbers, (integers or real numbers) in positional numeral systems. The name "digit" comes from the fact that the 10 digits (ancient Latin digita meaning fingers) of the hands correspond to the 10 symbols of the common base 10 number system, i.e. the decimal (ancient Latin adjective dec. meaning ten) digits.

Un chiffre est un symbole employé pour représenter des nombres. Le mot « chiffre » vient de l'arabe sifr (أَلصِّفْر ʾaṣ-ṣifr), utilisé pour « zéro » et signifiant « le vide ». Contrairement à l'alphabet latin, les chiffres arabes font partie des écritures de type logographique. Par exemple, le symbole « 1 » se prononce de façon différente dans chaque langue, mais représente le même élément abstrait et reste donc compréhensible sous sa forme écrite.

Ziffer (aus dem Sanskrit sunya für Leere, über das Arabische al-Sifr für Null) ist ein Schriftzeichen, das für die Darstellung von Zahlen verwendet wird. Allerdings ist nicht jedes zur Zahlendarstellung benutzte Zeichen eine Ziffer, sondern nur diejenigen, die auch einzeln eine Zahl repräsentieren. Andere Zeichen, wie z.B. Vor- und Trennzeichen, gelten nicht als Ziffern.

Cyfra – umowny znak pisarski służący do zapisywania liczb. Już w trzecim tysiącleciu p.n.e. używano w Egipcie hieroglifów do oznaczania jednostek, dziesiątek i tak dalej aż do 10 000 000. Innych cyfr używano w Babilonii, jeszcze innych w starożytnej Grecji i Rzymie. Rozpowszechnione obecnie tak zwane cyfry arabskie pochodzą naprawdę z Indii. Arabowie tylko sprowadzili je z Indii do Europy - między X a XIII w.

Een cijfer is een enkelvoudig symbool waarmee een telbaar aantal wordt aangeduid. De westerse cijfers van het tientallig stelsel zijn: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. Ze worden Arabische cijfers genoemd, omdat ze afkomstig zijn uit het Arabisch. De Arabieren zelf hebben ze echter weer uit India overgenomen. Het woord "cijfer" komt van het Arabische sifr, dat "nul" betekent en op zijn beurt uit het Sanskriet ontleed werd: sunya-s "ledig"
