North Island

The North Island is one of the two main islands of New Zealand, the other being the South Island. The island is 113,729 square km in area, making it the world's 14th-largest island. It has a population of 3,148,400 .Several important cities are in the North Island, notably New Zealand's largest city, Auckland, and Wellington, the capital, located at the southern extremity of the island. Approximately 76% of New Zealand's population lives in the North Island.According to Māori mythology, that the North and South Islands of New Zealand came from the time of Māui, who was a demigod. Māui and his brothers were fishing from their canoe (the South Island) when he caught a great fish and pulled it from the sea. While he was not looking his brothers fought over the fish and chopped it up. This great fish became the North Island and thus the Māori name for the North Island is Te Ika-a-Māui (The Fish of Māui). The mountains and valleys are said to have been formed as a result of Māui's brothers' hacking at the fish.

Die neuseeländische Nordinsel wird durch die 35 km breite Cookstraße von der Südinsel getrennt. Die Nordinsel bildet den Siedlungsschwerpunkt des Landes, auf ihr befinden sich die größte Stadt Auckland (1,3 Mio. Einwohner) und die Hauptstadt Wellington (300.000 Einwohner). Die Fläche beträgt 114.597 km2. Im Inselinneren befinden sich mehrere aktive Vulkane und Geysire. Höchster Vulkan ist der Ruapehu mit einer Höhe von 2.797 m.

L'isola ha una superficie di 113.729 chilometri quadrati, il che la rende la quattordicesima isola più grande del mondo.Sull'Isola del Nord sono state costruite molte città importanti, tra cui Auckland (la più grande della nazione) e Wellington (la capitale della Nuova Zelanda), situate nella sua estremità meridionale. Nell'Isola del Nord vive circa il 76 ella popolazione neozelandese.Secondo la mitologia dei Maori, l'Isola del Nord e quella del Sud nacquero all'epoca di Maui, che era un semidio. Mentre egli pescava insieme ai suoi fratelli a bordo della loro canoa (l'Isola del Sud), presero un grosso pesce e cercarono di tirarlo fuori dal mare. Mentre Maui non stava guardando, i suoi fratelli combatterono col pesce fino a che non riuscirono a farlo affiorare dall'acqua. Questo grande pesce divenne l'Isola del Nord e infatti il suo nome in lingua maori è Te Ika-a-Maui (cioè il pesce di Maui). Secondo questa leggenda, le montagne e le valli della grande isola sono il risultato dei numerosi colpi dati al pesce dai fratelli di Maui.
