North-West Frontier Province

For the 1959 British film see Northwest Frontier The North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) (Urdu: shemaal maghribi sarhadi soobe شمال مغربی سرحدی صوبہ) is the smallest of the four main provinces of Pakistan. The NWFP is home to the majority Pashtuns (locally referred to as Pukhtuns) as well as other smaller ethnic groups. The province borders Afghanistan to the west and north, the Northern Areas to the northeast, Azad Kashmir to the east, Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) to the south, and Pakistani Punjab and Islamabad Capital Territory to the east. The FATA forms a buffer between the NWFP and Baluchistan. The principal language is Pashto and the provincial capital is Peshawar. The province is variously referred to as Pakhtunkhwa (پښتونخواه), which means "Pashtun Area" in Pashto, and Sarhad, meaning "Frontier", (سرحد) in Urdu.

Die pakistanische Nordwestprovinz (englisch North-West Frontier Province, daher häufig NWFP, auch Nordwestliche Grenzprovinz) ist sehr stark von den Afghanen bevölkert, die man auch Pathanen oder Paschtunen nennt. Große Teile der Provinz gehörten einst zu Afghanistan. Die Hauptstadt der NWFP ist Peschawar. Die Nordwestprovinz und die Stammesgebiete unter Bundesverwaltung (FATA) werden von den Afghanen Ost-Afghanistan oder auch Paschtunistan genannt.

La provincia de la Frontera del Noroeste es una la provincia más pequeña de las cuatro provincias de Pakistán. La provincia está habitada, entre otros, por patanes y afganos. Limita con Afganistán al oeste y al norte, y con los Territorios del Norte y Cachemira Azad al noreste y este.El idioma principal es el patán. La capital de la provincia es Peshawar. Algunos patanes llaman a la provincia Pajtunjwa (‘tierra de los patanes’ en idioma patán), mientras que en idioma urdu también es conocida como Sarhad.La provincia tiene una superficie de 74 521 km². En el 2003 estaba habitada por 19 343 242 personas. Está compuesta por 24 distritos.
