Clockwise from the left: continued from right to left: ]] North Africa or Northern Africa is the northernmost region of the African continent, linked by the Sahara to Sub-Saharan Africa. Geopolitical, the United Nations definition of Northern Africa includes eight countries or territories; Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia, and Western Sahara. Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Mauritania, and Libya together are alhhhhhh the Maghreb or Maghrib, while Egypt and Sudan are referred to as Nile Valley, Egypt is a transcontinental country by virtue of the Sinai Peninsula, which is in Asia. North Africa also includes a number of Spanish possessions, Ceuta and Melilla (tiny Spanish exclaves or islets off the coast of Morocco). The Canary Islands and the Portuguese Madeira Islands, in the North Atlantic Ocean northwest of the African mainland, are sometimes included in considerations of the region.

Nordafrika ist die am genauesten umrissene multinationale geographische Einheit Afrikas. Ihr hauptsächlicher Bestimmungsfaktor ist die mancherorts bis fast an die Küsten reichende Wüste Sahara. Ihre kulturelle Einheit wird durch den Islam bestimmt, ihre ethnische durch Araber, Mauren und Berber, im südlichsten Bereich auch Nubier, Amharen und schwarzafrikanische Ethnien. Zu den Kernstaaten Nordafrikas zählen Marokko mit der West-Sahara, Algerien, Tunesien (kleiner Maghreb), Libyen (großer Maghreb), Ägypten sowie der Sudan (nur der Norden). Mauretanien, Niger, Mali, Tschad sowie der Norden Äthiopiens sind hingegen Randzonen und nur in den notwendigen Zusammenhängen (z.B. Geologie, Klima, Ökologie, Sahel-Zone) relevant.
