Norte

Região Norte (pron. IPA []; English: North Region), is a region in the northern part of Portugal. It is a land of dense vegetation and profound historic and cultural wealth. Its capital is the city of Porto. The region has 4,034,271 inhabitants (2007), and its area is 21,278 km² (density of 173 inhabitants per square kilometre). It is one of five regions of Mainland Portugal (NUTS II subdivisions). The Norte is a culturally varied region, thus historical rivalry between different neighbouring cities and towns are very common, although with strong common Portuguese identity, but unlike other regions where every city and town are culturally very similar.

Unter Norte versteht man immer Wind aus nördlichen Richtungen. Nortes sind in verschiedenen Teilen der Erde bekannt. So gibt zum Beispiel im Norden Spaniens kalte Fallwinde von den im Winter schneebedeckten Gebirgszügen der Pyrenäen. In Argentinien treten die Nortes als feuchtwarme Nordwinde auf der Vorderseite von Tiefdruckgebieten (analog zu einer trogvorderseitigen Südwestanströmung in Europa) auf. In Nordamerika können sie als kalte "Northers" starke Temperaturstürze in den südlichen Staaten mit sich bringen, wenn sie binnen Stunden die warme Luft aus der Region um den Golf von Mexiko ersetzen. Dann kann die Temperatur von einen auf den nächsten Tag um mehr als 30 °C fallen.

Die Região Norte (Region Nord) ist eine Region Portugals. Sie umfasst die Distrikte  Viana do Castelo, Porto, Vila Real, Bragança und  Braga zur Gänze sowie Teile der Distrikte Aveiro, Viseu und Guarda.Nachbarregion im Süden ist Região Centro. Im Norden und Osten grenzt die Região Norte an Spanien. Im Westen liegt der Atlantische Ozean.Die Fläche der Região Norte umfasst mit 21.278 km² 24 % des portugiesischen Festlandes. Die Region hat eine Bevölkerung von 3,7 Millionen (2001, 37 % von Festlands-Portugal).

Confina con la Spagna (Galizia a nord e Castiglia e Leon a est), con la regione Centro a sud e con l'Oceano Atlantico a ovest. La superficie è di 21.278 km² (24% del Portogallo continentale), la popolazione (2001) è di 3.687.212 (37% del Portogallo continentale). Norte, conhecido também por setentrião, é uma dire(c)ção fundamental e um dos quatro pontos cardeais. É um dos pontos para onde aponta a agulha da bússola (Norte magnético). Quando se observa o nascer do sol de frente, o norte fica à mão esquerda. O seu oposto é o Sul.A palavra setentrião deriva de septem e triones (sete trios, literalmente) – em alusão à constelação da  Ursa Maior. É também utilizada como sinónimo de pólo Norte e era usado pelos romanos para designar o vento norte. De setentrião deriva o adjectivo para as coisas relativas ao norte, "setentrional".
