Social norms are described by sociologists as being laws that govern society’s behaviors . Although these norms are not considered to be formal laws within society, they still work to promote a great deal of social control  . Social norms can be enforced formally (e.g., through sanctions) or informally (e.g., through body language and non-verbal communication cues .) If people do not follow these norms then they become labeled as deviants and this can lead to them being considered the outcast of society . It is important to note that what is considered “normal” is relative to the location of the culture in which the social interaction is taking place . Norms in every culture create conformity that allows for people to become socialized to the culture in which they live . Sociology’s theorists such as Talcott Parsons and Karl Marx have both come up with theories for why they believe norms are needed in society . According to Parsons of the functionalist school, norms dictate the interactions of people in all social encounters . On the other hand, Marx believes that norms are used to promote the creation of roles in society which allows for people of different levels of social class structure to be able to function properly . Marx claims that this power dynamic creates social order .

Soziale Normen (Gesellschaftliche Normen, Soziale Skripte) sind konkrete Vorschriften, die das Sozialverhalten betreffen. Sie definieren mögliche Handlungsformen in einer sozialen Situation. Sie sind gesellschaftlich und kulturell bedingt und daher von Gesellschaft zu Gesellschaft verschieden, unterliegen aber immer dem sozialen Wandel. Normen sind (äußerliche) Erwartungen der Gesellschaft an das Verhalten von Individuen in unterschiedlicher Verbindlichkeit. Sie sind zu unterscheiden von (innerer) vernunftgemäßer Gewissensprüfung von Handlungen (siehe Moral, Ethik, kategorischer Imperativ). Émile Durkheim war einer der ersten Soziologen, der die Wirkung normativer Regelungen untersuchte. Später erforschte insbesondere Talcott Parsons die Wirkung von Normen auf das Verhalten von Individuen.

Une norme (du latin norma, « équerre, règle ») désigne un état habituellement répandu ou moyen considéré le plus souvent comme une règle à suivre. Ce terme générique désigne un ensemble de caractéristiques décrivant un objet, un être, qui peut être virtuel ou non. Tout ce qui entre dans une norme est considéré comme « normal », alors que ce qui en sort est « anormal ». Ces termes peuvent sous-entendre ou non des jugements de valeur.

Sociala normer, eller bara normer, är ett sociologiskt begrepp för intersubjektiva, allmänt delade, men många gånger underförstådda, regler och förväntningar på beteende som gäller inom en mindre social gemenskap eller i samhället i stort. Med normer menas ett riktmärke (mönster) för hur man ska utföra något eller hur man ska uppträda mot varandra. För att flockdjur ska kunna fungera tillsammans krävs det regler för hur individerna ska bete sig mot varandra. Hos lägre djur styrs normer av nedärvda instinkter, men hos människor finns ett stort spelrum för inlärd variation. När människor interagerar med varandra skapas mönster för hur man ska bete sig mot varandra inom familjer, företag, föreningar etc och samhället i stort. Normer gäller även mellan organisationer, mellan företag och mellan stater.
