Nordic countries

The Nordic countries make up a region in Northern Europe, sometimes called the Nordic region, consisting of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden and their associated territories which include the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Åland. The region's five nation-states and three autonomous regions share much common history as well as common traits in their respective societies, such as political systems. Politically, Nordic countries do not form a separate entity, but they co-operate in the Nordic Council. Linguistically, the area is heterogeneous, with two unrelated language groups, the North Germanic branch of Indo-European languages and the Baltic-Finnic and Sami branches of Uralic languages. The Nordic countries have a combined population of approximately 25 million spread over a land area of 3.5 million km² (Greenland accounts for 60% of the total area).

L'expression pays nordiques désigne le Danemark, la Finlande, l'Islande, la Norvège et la Suède, ainsi que leurs États associés : Åland, le Groenland et les îles Féroé. Les îles Féoré et le Groenland font partie du Danemark tandis que Åland est un territoire autonome rattaché à la Finlande. Le concept est proche de celui d'Europe du Nord. L'Estonie s'identifie comme un pays nordique depuis 1991 et demande à être identifiée comme telle par la communauté internationale.

Die nordischen Länder oder „Der Norden“ werden als die Staaten Nordeuropas definiert, die in Skandinavien liegen oder aber durch die Kalmarer Union historisch und kulturell miteinander verbunden waren und heute im Nordischen Rat vertreten sind. Der Begriff „Norden“ wurde nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg geprägt und fand insbesondere durch das länderkundliche Werk von Axel Sømme „A Geography of Norden“ (1960) weite Verbreitung.

Kraje nordyckie - termin wiążący się z określeniem kraje skandynawskie, ale o szerszym znaczeniu. Obejmuje on kraje członkowskie Rady Nordyckiej, tj. trzy kraje skandynawskie (Danię, Norwegię i Szwecję) oraz Islandię i Finlandię. Estonia również ostatnio zaczęła wyraźnie przedstawiać się jako kraj nordycki, mając bardzo silne kulturowe, językowe i etniczne związki z Finlandią oraz związki kulturowe ze Szwecją, jednakże nie należy ona jeszcze do Rady Nordyckiej. Z Radą związane są też trzy terytoria autonomiczne: Grenlandia, Wyspy Owcze i Wyspy Alandzkie.

De Noordse landen vormen een regio in Noord-Europa, ook wel de Noordse regio genoemd, bestaande uit Denemarken, Finland, IJsland, Noorwegen en Zweden, en hun overzeese gebiedsdelen zoals de Faeröer Eilanden, Groenland en de Ålandseilanden. Vaak wordt de term Scandinavië gebruikt voor de Noordse landen.
