Noises Off is a 1982
play by
Michael Frayn. The idea for it was born in 1970, when Frayn was standing in the wings watching a performance of
Chinamen, a
farce that he had written for
Lynn Redgrave. According to the playwright, "It was funnier from behind than in front and I thought that one day I must write a farce from behind."

Noises Off is a
1992 comedy film about a motley and disorganized theatre company and their misadventures. It is based on the play
Noises Off by
Michael Frayn. It utilizes the play-within-a-play (or in this case play-within-a-film) format, with the play being a
pastiche of the
farce genre, but the movie being a farce itself. We see the play several times, and comedy emerges from the subtle variations in the performance each time as off-stage chaos affects on-stage performance.
