Newport Rising

The Newport Rising was the last large scale armed rebellion against authority in mainland Britain. It occurred on November 4 1839 when somewhere between 1,000-5,000 armed coal miners marched on the town of Newport, Monmouthshire, intent on liberating the Chartist prisoners held under armed guard in the town's Westgate Hotel.
