New Line Cinema, founded in
1967, is
one of the major American film studios. Though it initially began as an independent film studio, it is currently a
subsidiary of
Time Warner. The current co-
chairmen and co-
CEOs are founders
Robert Shaye and
Michael Lynne.New Line Cinema operates several divisions, including
theatrical distribution,
marketing,
home video, and a unit specializing in
independent film called
Picturehouse (formerly known as
Fine Line Features) with fellow Time Warner subsidiary
HBO. Unlike other independent studios such as
Orion Pictures,
Carolco Pictures, or
Cannon Films, New Line Cinema has grown and prospered to become one of Hollywood's major film studios, culminating in the hit
Lord of the Rings film trilogy that brought prestige to the studio. Prior to this, New Line was responsible for the cult classic
Dark City, the
Austin Powers film trilogy, the fantasy
Pleasantville, the
Nightmare on Elm Street series, the films of
John Waters, and the
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films.

La storia La New Line Cinema è stata la prima compagnia per la produzione di film indipendenti ad essere fondata negli
Stati Uniti ed è tuttora una della compagnie americane indipendenti di maggior successo. Fu fondata nel 1967 da Robert K. Shaye. Shaye cominciò molto presto la propria carriera come regista: vinse il primo premio di un concorso indetto dalla Società Rosenthal, dove ricevette il premio per il migliore film come regista di età inferiore ai 25 anni. In realtà la sua carriera come regista indipendente era cominciata dieci anni prima, a 15 anni, quando scrisse, produsse e diresse un film per promuovere il supermercato del padre. Divenuto produttore, con la collaborazione di Micheal Lynne, che riveste il ruolo di vice direttore esecutivo della New Line Cinema Corporation da 25 anni, ha prodotto innumerevoli film di successo.
