New Bedford is a city in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. It is located about south of Boston, southeast of Providence, Rhode Island, east of Fall River, south of Taunton, northeast of Newport, Rhode Island, and about east-northeast of New York City. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 95,072, making it the sixth-largest city in Massachusetts. New Bedford is nicknamed "The Whaling City" because it was, during the 19th century, one of the most important whaling ports in the world, along with Nantucket and New London, CT. The city, along with Fall River and Taunton, is one of three cities on the south coast of Massachusetts. The Greater New Bedford-Fall River area is home to largest Portuguese American community in the United States. About 45-50% of the population in both cites and the surrounding areas has Portuguese ancestry.
