Network File System

part of the operating system of a local area network which allows access to files on other computers, NFS

A network file system is any computer file system that supports sharing of files, printers and other resources as persistent storage over a computer network. The first file servers were developed in the 1970s, and in 1985 Sun Microsystems created the Network File System (NFS) which became the first widely used distributed file system. Other notable distributed file systems are Andrew File System (AFS) and Server Message Block SMB, also known as CIFS.

<networking, operating system> (NFS) A protocol developed by Sun Microsystems, and defined in RFC 1094, which allows a computer to access files over a network as if they were on its local disks. This protocol has been incorporated in products by more than two hundred companies, and is now a de facto standard. NFS is implemented using a connectionless protocol (UDP) in order to make it stateless.
