Nethuns

In Etruscan mythology, Nethuns was the god of wells, later expanded to all water, including the sea. The Etruscans conception of the deity affected Roman Neptune. The name Nethuns is likely cognate with that of the Celtic god Nechtan and the Persian and Vedic gods sharing the name Apam Napat, all based on the Proto-Indo-European word "nephew, grandson".

Nethuns war ein etruskischer Gott.Ursprünglich war er ein italischer Quell- und Wassergott (umbrisch bedeutet nept Nässe). Nach und nach wurde Nethuns Gott identisch mit dem griechischen Gott Poseidon.

Nethuns er i etruskisk mytologi guden for brønner, senere utvidet til å omfatte alt som har med vann å gjøre, også havet. Den etruskiske oppfattelsen av guddommen påvirket den romerske guddommen Neptun. Det er antatt at navnet Nethuns er språklig beslektet med den keltiske guden Nechtan. Antagelig kan det knyttes en forbindelse til de persisiske og vediske gudene som delte navnet Apam Napat. Alle disse er basert på det før-indoeuropeiske ordet *népots, «nevø», «barnebarn».
