The NEPTUNE Canada project is the world’s first regional-scale underwater ocean observatory that plugs directly into the Internet. Since December 2009, it has allowed people to "surf" the seafloor while ocean scientists run deep-water experiments from labs and universities around the world. Along with its sister project, VENUS, NEPTUNE offers a unique approach to ocean science. Traditionally, ocean scientists have relied on infrequent ship cruises or space-based satellites to carry out their research, while the NEPTUNE project uses a remotely operated crawler.

Neptune is the eighth and farthest planet from the Sun in the Solar System. It is the fourth-largest planet by diameter and the third largest by mass. Neptune is 17 times the mass of Earth and is slightly more massive than its near-twin Uranus, which is 15 times the mass of Earth but not as dense. On average, Neptune orbits the Sun at a distance of 30.1 AU, approximately 30 times the Earth–Sun distance. Named for the Roman god of the sea, its astronomical symbol is ♆, a stylized version of the god Neptune's trident.

Neptun ist von der Sonne aus gezählt mit einer Entfernung von durchschnittlich 4,5 Milliarden km der achte und äußerste Planet im Sonnensystem. Er wurde im Jahr 1846 aus Bahnstörungen des Uranus entdeckt und zeigt ein Scheibchen von nur 2". Dennoch ist er mit einem Durchmesser von fast 50.000 km (knapp 4 × Erde, 57,74-faches Erdvolumen) nach Uranus der viertgrößte Planet des Sonnensystems. Neptun bildet zusammen mit dem Uranus die Untergruppe der „Eisriesen“.

Neptune est la huitième et la plus lointaine planète du système solaire. C'est également la dernière des géantes gazeuses. Elle a été découverte par l'astronome allemand Johann Gottfried Galle le en suivant les indications données par Urbain Le Verrier, qui, tout comme l'astronome anglais John Couch Adams, avait prévu par calcul la région du ciel où on pourrait la trouver. Son nom vient du dieu romain des océans, Neptune. Neptune n'est pas visible à l'œil nu et n'apparaît comme un disque bleu-vert qu'à travers un télescope. Planète la plus éloignée de la Terre, Neptune n'a été visitée que par une seule sonde, Voyager 2, qui passa près de la planète le . Son plus grand satellite naturel est Triton.

Neptun – ósma i ostatnia planeta Układu Słonecznego. Jej jasność nie przekracza 7,6^m. Posiada 13 odkrytych księżyców, spośród których największy jest Tryton. Nazwa tej planety pochodzi od rzymskiego boga – władcy mórz – Neptuna. Zalicza się do planet gazowych, zwanych gazowymi olbrzymami. Jego symbolem jest trójząb – broń Posejdona – odpowiednika Neptuna w mitologii greckiej.
