Nepali language

Nepali (Khaskura) is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in Nepal, Bhutan, and some parts of India and Myanmar (Burma). The term Nepal originally meant the Kathmandu Valley, and thus the terme Nepali was historically used for the indigenous Tibeto-Burman language of that valley, today known as Newari or Nepal Bhasa. However, this article will cover only the official Indo-Aryan language. It is the official language of Nepal and also the official language of Sikkim, a state in India. Roughly half the population of Nepal speaks Nepali as a mother tongue. Many other Nepalese speak it as a second language, however its imposition as the sole official language in the education system, courts and government has become increasingly controversial and was an important issue in the 1996-2006 civil war.

Le népalais (ou nepâlî ; nom local : नेपाली / nepālī) est une langue de la famille des langues indo-iraniennes parlée au Népal, en Inde et au Bhoutan. C'est la langue officielle du Népal. Ce petit pays enclavé entre les deux géants les plus peuplés du monde — la Chine et l’Inde — semble pratiquer plus de 90 langues dans un territoire de km² — six fois petit que celui de la France. Le népalais est aussi une des langues administratives indiennes et elle est également la langue officielle de la région indienne Sikkim. En Inde, plus de 2 millions d’indien parlent le népalais en tant que leur langue maternelle. La langue s'écrit en devanâgarî, la même écriture que pour le hindi.

Nepali (नेपाली, nepālī; in Anlehnung an das englische Nepalese auch Nepalesisch genannt) gehört zum indoarischen Zweig der indoiranischen Untergruppe der indogermanischen Sprachen.Insgesamt wird es von mindestens 17 Millionen Menschen als Muttersprache gesprochen, die überwiegend in Nepal leben, wo es Amtssprache ist. Darüber hinaus gibt es etwa 6 Millionen Sprecher in Indien und rund 150.000 in Bhutan. Nepali wird in der auch für andere indoarische Sprachen, zum Beispiel Hindi, benutzten Schrift Devanagari geschrieben.

Nepalees is een lid van de Pahari groep van de Indo-Arische talen, gesproken door 10 miljoen mensen in Nepal en door ongeveer een miljoen mensen in delen van India. Het Nepalees wordt ook wel eens Gurkhali genoemd, naar de bezetters van de Gurkha stam, die Nepal bezette in de 18e eeuw. Het Nepalees wordt geschreven in het Devanagari alfabet.
