Neoplatonism (also called Neo-Platonism) , is the modern term for a school of mystical philosophy that took shape in the 3rd century AD, based on the teachings of Plato and earlier Platonists, with its earliest contributor believed to be Plotinus, and his teacher Ammonius Saccas. Neoplatonism focused on the spiritual and cosmological aspects of Platonic thought, synthesizing Platonism with Egyptian and Jewish theology. However, Neoplatonists would have considered themselves simply Platonists, and the modern distinction is due to the perception that their philosophy contained sufficiently unique interpretations of Plato to make it substantially different from what Plato wrote and believed.

Neuplatonismus ist eine moderne, erstmals in den Philosophiegeschichten von Thomas Gale (1670) und Dietrich Tiedemann (1791) eingeführte und seit etwa 1900 allgemein gängige Bezeichnung für die spätantike philosophische Schule oder Strömung, die zwar auf den Lehren Platons und des Platonismus basiert, Platon aber teilweise anders als seine Zeitgenossen deutet. Sie entstand im 3. Jahrhundert aus dem Mittelplatonismus und brachte bis zum Ende der Antike im 6./7. Jahrhundert zahlreiche bedeutende Vertreter hervor.

Le néoplatonisme ou platonisme de l'Antiquité tardive tentait de concilier la philosophie de Platon avec certains courants de la spiritualité orientale.
