Nekemte (also called Lekemt) is a
market town in western
Ethiopia. Located in the
Misraq Welega Zone of the
Oromia Region (or
kilil), Nekemte has has a longitude and latitude of and an elevation of 2,088 meters. Based on figures from the
Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this town has an estimated total population of 84,506, of whom 42,121 were males and 42,385 were females.According to the 1994 national census it had 47,258 inhabitants.Nekemte was the capital of the former
Welega Province, and is home to a
museum of
Wollega Oromo culture. Federal government has announced that a university will be built in Nekemte, one of 13 planned for the entire country in the immediate future. It is served by an airport (
ICAO code HANK,
IATA NEK).
