Near East

The Near East is a term commonly used by archaeologists, geographers and historians, less commonly by journalists and commentators, to refer to the region encompassing Anatolia (the Asian portion of modern Turkey), the Levant (Palestine, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon), Georgia, Armenia, and Mesopotamia (Iraq and eastern Syria). The alternative term Middle East—preferred in some political and economic contexts—is not used by Near Eastern archaeologists and historians.

Le Proche-Orient est une région d'Asie et d'Afrique  comprenant les pays du sud-est du bassin méditerranéen. On l'englobe souvent dans le Moyen-Orient (traduction de l'expression anglo-saxonne de plus en plus largement utilisée de Middle East). Un synonyme plus ancien est le Levant (là où le soleil se lève).

Vicino Oriente è un'espressione che propriamente andrebbe usata per indicare la regione geografica oggi per lo più arabofona che si estende dalla sponda orientale del Mar Mediterraneo all'Iraq e alla Penisola Arabica. Corrispondentemente, il termine Medio Oriente spetterebbe propriamente ai paesi dell'area ancora più a est: Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan (è ad essa che tuttora fa spesso riferimento l'espressione francese Moyen Orient e quella inglese "Middle East").

O Oriente Próximo ou Próximo Oriente compreende a região da Ásia próxima ao mar Mediterrâneo, a oeste do rio Eufrates, incluindo: Síria, Líbano, Palestina e Iraque.

Бли́жний Восто́к — название региона, расположенного в Западной Азии и Северной Африке. Название дано европейцами как ближайшему к ним восточному региону. Основное население: тюрки, арабы, персы, евреи. Большинство населения — мусульмане. Ближний Восток является одним из путей из Европы и Америки в Азию. Климат в основном засушливый, имеется несколько крупных рек, которые используются для орошения. Основной нефтедобывающий регион.
