Native Americans in the United States are the indigenous peoples in North America within the boundaries of the present-day continental United States, parts of Alaska, and the island state of Hawaii. They are composed of numerous, distinct Native American tribes and ethnic groups, many of which survive as intact political communities. The terms used to refer to Native Americans have been controversial. According to a 1995 US Census Bureau set of home interviews, most of the respondents with an expressed preference refer to themselves as American Indians or Indians, and this term has been adopted by major newspapers and some academic groups; however, this term does not include Native Hawaiians or those Alaskan Natives, such as Aleuts, Alutiiq, Cup'ik, Yup'ik, and Inuit peoples, who are not American Indians.

Zu den Indianern Nordamerikas werden üblicherweise sämtliche Indianer nördlich von Mexiko gezählt. Dies beinhaltet das Staatsgebiet Kanadas, wo sie First Nations genannt werden und die USA, wo sie als Native Americans oder American Indians bezeichnet werden. Heute sind in den USA 562 Stämme anerkannt (davon allein 225 in Alaska), in Kanada 615, wobei das Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development insgesamt 632 aufführt. Ausgenommen sind dabei die Ureinwohner Hawaiis, die Inuit, Unangan und Dorset, die sich genetisch und kulturell stark von den nordamerikanischen Indianern unterscheiden. Ebenfalls nicht zu den Indianern gezählt werden Ethnien wie die Métis.

Le terme Amérindiens désigne les premiers occupants du continent américain et leurs descendants. En 1492, l’explorateur Christophe Colomb pense avoir atteint les Indes occidentales alors qu’il vient de débarquer en Amérique. À cause de cette erreur, on continue d’utiliser le mot « Indiens » pour parler des populations du Nouveau Monde. Avec les travaux du cartographe Martin Waldseemüller au début du , on commence à parler de « continent américain », en l’honneur du navigateur italien Amerigo Vespucci ; ses habitants deviennent les « Indiens d’Amérique » pour les distinguer des populations de l’Inde.

USA:s ursprungsbefolkning är de indianstammar från de områden i Nordamerika som nu omfattas av USA:s gränser. De består av många olika stammar, varav många finns kvar än idag.

Tubylczy Amerykanin (inaczej rdzenny Amerykanin, czasem też "rodowity Amerykanin", ang. Native American) - wieloznaczne pojęcie, które w zależności od autora i kontekstu może oznaczać:

• przedstawiciela autochtonicznej ludności obu Ameryk, czyli ludów tubylczych które zamieszkiwały Nowy Świat przed początkiem europejskiej kolonizacji. Do tubylczych Amerykanów zalicza się Indian obu Ameryk, Inuitów (Eskimosów) i Aleutów z północnej części Ameryki Północnej, a czasem też tubylczych Hawajczyków i Metysów. Pojęcia "tubylczy Amerykanin" w tym rozumieniu używa się w wielu krajach, w tym w Polsce (gdzie zwykle oznacza w uproszczeniu tyle, co "Indianin") i w USA (gdzie ma także inne znaczenia).
