Names of God in Judaism

In Judaism, the name of God is more than a distinguishing title. It represents the Jewish conception of the divine nature, and of the relation of God to the Jewish people. To show the sacredness of the names of God, and as a means of showing respect and reverence for them, the scribes of sacred texts took pause before copying them, and used terms of reverence so as to keep the true name of God concealed. The various names of God in Judaism represent God as he is known, as well as the divine aspects which are attributed to him.

Privé de Noms de Dieu propres, YHWH reçoit néanmoins de nombreuses métonymies permettant à Son peuple de le glorifier en utilisant des noms communs désignant ses attributs et ses éminentes qualités, car « Il est Puissant » (Elohim), Il est « bon Juge » (Adonaï), Il est « Un et Unique » (ʾèḥād). Afin de marquer leur respect, leur révérence, leur crainte envers YHWH les soferim, scribes des textes sacrés, marquent une pause avant de transcrire le verbe YHWH ou l'une des métonymies qui lui sont attribuées, et préfèrent utiliser une autre marque de révérence envers Lui lorsque noter le nom d'une de ses qualités n'est pas vraiment nécessaire.

Nella Bibbia e nella tradizione ebraica ci si riferisce a Dio utilizzando vari appellativi ed espressioni.Questa pluralità di nomi è anche dovuta al fatto che nell'ebraismo il nome proprio di Dio è considerato ineffabile. Di conseguenza il nome di Dio è uno dei casi più tipici di qere-ketiv, cioè di differenza fra pronuncia e forma scritta.
