Najaf

Najaf (; BGN: An Najaf) is a city in Iraq about 160 km south of Baghdad. Its estimated population in 2003 was 585,600 people, though this has increased significantly since 2003 due to immigration from abroad. It is the capital of Najaf province. It is one of the holiest cities of Shia Islām  and the center of Shia political power in Iraq.

Nadschaf (auch Nedschef; , ) ist eine Stadt im Irak und Hauptstadt der Provinz Nadschaf. Sie liegt südlich von Bagdad und hat 482.583 Einwohner (Stand 1. Januar 2005). Sie gilt als eine der sieben heiligen Städte des schiitischen Islams.Nahezu 100 er Einwohner sind  Araber. 99,99 er Einwohner sind  Muslime. Über 95 % davon sind  Schiiten und 5 %  Sunniten.Für Schiiten, insbesondere für die Imamiten, gilt Nadschaf als heilig: In der Stadt befindet sich die Imam-Ali-Moschee, Grabmoschee des für die Schiiten sehr wichtigen Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, dem Schwiegersohn und Nachfolger des Propheten Mohammed. Die Moschee gilt als bedeutendstes islamisches Heiligtum des Irak.

Nadżaf (An-Najaf) - miasto w środkowym Iraku, w pobliżu rzeki Eufrat. Liczba mieszkańców około 250 tys. mieszkańców. Miato zostało założone prawdopodobnie przez kalifa Haruna ar-Raszida w 791 roku, rozkwit przeżyło w X wieku. Meczet z grobem kalifa Alego Ibn Abi Taliba, kuzyna i zięcia Mahometa w Nadżafie jest ośrodkiem kultu religijnego szyitów (islam).
