The Northeast Air Defense Sector (NEADS), is a component of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) located at what used to be Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York. As of November, 2006, NEADS has taken over the Southeast Air Defense Sector's airspace, giving NEADS the responsibility of providing detection and air defense for the eastern half of the United States. The sector's western perimeter runs along the Mississippi River, cutting east above Mississippi and down between Mississippi and Alabama. The eastern perimeter of the sector is the Atlantic Ocean, and the northern perimeter is the Canadian border. It has not been determined whether NEADS will officially be called the Eastern Air Defense Sector or just the Eastern Defense Sector, thus remaining as NEADS until the United States Air Force finalizes the decision.
