Namaste
Namasté or Namaskar ( in
Nepali and
Hindi (from internal
sandhi between and ) is an
Indian greeting or
parting phrase as well as a gesture. Taken literally, it means "I bow to you". The word is derived from
Sanskrit (namas): to
bow,
obeisance, reverential
salutation, and (te): "to you" . When spoken to another person, it is commonly accompanied by a slight bow made with hands pressed together, palms touching and fingers pointed upwards, in front of the chest. The gesture can also be performed wordlessly and carry the same meaning.

Namas
Namas (Sanskrit) [from nam to bow, make reverence; cf Pali namo] A reverence, consisting of an inclination of the body; both in act and in writing a reverential salutation. "The first word of a daily invocation among Buddhists, meaning 'I humbly trust, or adore, or acknowledge' the Lord, as: 'Namo tasso Bhagavato Arahato' etc., addressed to Lord Buddha. The priests are called 'Masters of Namah' [Namas] -- both Buddhist and Taoist, because this word is used in liturgy and prayers, in the invocation of the Tiratna, and with a slight change in the occult incantations to the Bodhisattvas and Nirmanakayas" (TG 224).
Namaste (honor, reverence, to thee!) is used in greeting gurus and spiritual sages.
