NAIR

Nair (IPA: [naːjar], Malayalam: നായര്‍, and sometimes spelt Nayar) is the name of an upper Hindu Caste from the southern Indian state of Kerala. The Nairs were a martial nobility, similar to the Samurai of Japan. and figure prominently in the history of Kerala.

The name Nambiar (IPA: [n̪ambjaːr]) applies to two separate Hindu communities from Kerala, South India: Nambiar (Nair Subcaste) (majority of Nambiars belong to this)- A sect of Nairs from the North Malabar region of Kerala, i.e. chieftains and feudal landlords.Nambiar (Ambalavasi) - Ambalavasi sect. Associated with ritualistic temple performances like Chakyar koothu and Koodiyattam. Nambiar is also an English family title that is independent of Hindu Nambiars from Kerala.
