Musashimaru Kōyō
, is a former
sumo wrestler. He was the second foreign-born wrestler in history to reach the rank of
yokozuna. Musashimaru's sheer 235 kilogram (517 pounds) bulk combined with 192 cm (six feet, four inches) of height made him a formidable opponent, and his fan base was helped by a surprising facial resemblance to Japanese warrior hero
Saigō Takamori.

japanischen Sumōringen den Rang eines
Yokozuna erreichte.Der junge Penitani gelangte im Alter von 10 nach
Hawaii, wo er an der High School als
Ringer im griechisch-römischen Stil so erfolgreich war, dass er eine Profikarriere ins Auge fasste. Er ging nach Japan, nahm einen japanischen Namen an und begann 1989 mit dem Sumōringen. 1991 wurde er Profisportler im
Ringerstall Musashigawa-beya des ehemaligen Yokozuna
Mienoumi. 1996 nahm er die japanische Staatsbürgerschaft an.
