Mumbai (Marathi: , IPA: ), formerly known as Bombay, is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. With an estimated population of about 13 million, it is the largest metropolis in India and one of the most populous cities in the world.Located off the west coast of India, the city has a deep natural harbour. Mumbai handles over half of India's passenger traffic and a significant amount of cargo.Mumbai is the commercial and entertainment capital of India, and houses important financial institutions, such as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and the corporate headquarters of many Indian companies. Mumbai attracts migrants from all over India because of the immense employment opportunities and the relatively high standard of living, but most end up living in shanties. The city is home to India's Hindi film and television industry, known as Bollywood. Mumbai is also one of the few cities that accommodates a national park, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, within its city limits.

Mumbai (; marathi मुंबई, Mumbaī; bis 1995 Bombay बॉम्बे) ist die Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates Maharashtra in Indien und die wichtigste Hafenstadt des Subkontinents. Sie liegt auf der Insel Salsette, vor der Westküste Maharashtras. Das Stadtzentrum befindet sich auf einem schmalen Landstreifen, der von der sumpfigen Küste ins Arabische Meer hineinragt. Die Stadt ist das wirtschaftliche Zentrum Indiens und beherbergt die größte Filmindustrie der Welt, Bollywood. Sie ist Verkehrsknoten und Kulturzentrum mit Universitäten, Theater, Museen und Galerien.

Bombaj (hindi i marathi मुंबई, trl. Muṁbaī, trb. Mumbaj; ang. Mumbai; do 1995 hindi बम्बई/बॉम्बे, trl. Bambaī/Bômbe, trb. Bambaj/Bombe, ang. Bombay - stare nazwy wciąż w powszechnym użyciu) - stolica indyjskiego stanu Maharashtra, położona na wyspie Salsette, na Morzu Arabskim. Według najnowszych danych w mieście tym mieszka 17 mln mieszkańców i jest 6. co do liczby mieszkańców metropolią na świecie. Wraz z miastami satelitarnymi tworzy wielką konurbację miejską. Dzięki naturalnemu portowi jest to także największy port zachodnich Indii. Jest to także wielki ośrodek finansowy. Siedziby tu mają liczne banki, (m.in. Reserve Bank of India), giełda (Bombay Stock Exchange) oraz liczne indyjskie firmy i korporacje. Dzięki temu, że poziom życia jest tu wyższy niż innych częściach kraju, przyciąga on imigrantów z całych Indii oraz całej Azji Południowej. Przez taki układ rzeczy mieszają się tu najróżniejsze kultury, religie i tradycje. Miasto często jest nazywane Bollywoodem, gdyż jest to stolica indyjskiej kinematografii. Tutejsze wytwórnie produkują rocznie najwięcej filmów na świecie.

Bombay (hindi/marathi: मुंबई), dal 1995 ufficialmente Mumbai, è una città dell'India, capitale dello stato del Maharashtra. Malgrado il cambio di denominazione in Mumbai, foneticamente più simile alla pronuncia marathi, in Italia e in gran parte dei paesi occidentali la città continua ad essere nota con il precedente nome.
