Mount Katahdin

Mount Katahdin (USGS name) is the highest mountain in Maine. Called Katahdin by people local to the peak and by the Penobscot Indians: the term means "The Greatest Mountain". It is located in east central Piscataquis County about 25 miles (40 km) northwest of  Millinocket. It divides the East and West Branches of the Penobscot River. From the low lake country to the south and east, the mountain appears to be one of the tallest and most abrupt in the Appalachian Mountains.

Der Mount Katahdin ist mit einer Höhe von (5273 ft) der höchste Berg in Maine, USA. Er ist Zentrum des Baxter State Park, einem großen Naturschutzgebiet. Auf seinem höchsten Gipfel, dem Baxter Peak, endet der Appalachian Trail. Der Name stammt von den in der Umgebung wohnenden Stämmen der Penobscotindianer und bedeutet soviel wie „Großer Berg“.

El monte Katahdin es la cumbre más elevada del estado de Maine, además del punto culminante del Parque Estatal Baxter, un área protegida de 80.000 ha, localizada en las White Mountains (Montañas Blancas). El parque cuenta con más de 45 cumbres, explorables a través de una red de senderos que suman 240 km aproximadamente.

Mount Katahdin are fiind cel mai înalt munte din statul Maine, SUA. El este situat în centrul parcului naţional Baxter unde se află şi vârful „Baxter Peak” care este punctul terminal nordic al drumului turistic Appalachian Trail. Numele muntelui provine din limba ameridienilor băştinaşi .
