Ein Motor (lat. motor, „Beweger“; []; auch []) ist eine Vorrichtung, die mechanische Arbeit verrichtet, indem sie verschiedene Energieformen, zum Beispiel thermische Energie, chemische Energie oder elektrische Energie, umwandelt.In der Regel verfügen Motoren über eine Welle, die sie in Rotation versetzen und durch sie mechanische Vorrichtungen wie Getriebe antreiben. Ausnahmen sind Raketenmotoren und Linearmotoren. Heute sind Verbrennungsmotoren und Elektromotoren von herausragender Bedeutung. Sprachlich ist die Abgrenzung zu Maschine und Antrieb oft nicht klar.

Un motore è una macchina capace di trasformare una sorgente di energia, che può essere in forma chimica (in presenza di un combustibile), elettrica o termica, in una energia meccanica o lavoro meccanico continui (i dispositivi capaci di questa trasformazione in modo impulsivo e discontinuo sono detti attuatori; muscoli piezoelettrici, elettrovalvole, relais ecc.).
