Moors

During the medieval period, Moor became a common term to refer to the Muslims of Islamic Spain and North Africa, who were of Arab or Berber descent. The name remains associated with the Muslims of Spain even today, despite being archaic and inaccurate, as it lumps Muslim and non-Muslim Arabs, Berbers and other Africans together, sometimes even with Iberian Muslims. In Spanish, the continued use of the cognate, moro, is considered by many to be racist; in English, the term has only historical contexts, with no proper present-day referent.

Die Mauren (abgel. v. der röm. Provinz Mauretanien bzw. dem Königreich Mauretanien, wiederum abgeleitet vom Griechischen mauros bzw. "amauros" = dunkel ; metaphorisch: "dunkelhäutig") - Sammelbezeichnung für jene in Nordafrika als Nomaden lebenden Berberstämme, die im 7. Jahrhundert von den Arabern islamisiert wurden und diese bei ihrer Eroberung der iberischen Halbinsel als kämpfende Truppe unterstützten.

Il termine Moro usato per indicare i musulmani, specialmente berberi (gli Arabi erano chiamati Saraceni o Agareni) che popolarono parte non trascurabile della Penisola iberica per oltre 800 anni e la Sicilia per quasi due secoli e mezzo, e che tuttora costituiscono l'elemento fondamentale autoctono nordafricano. Il termine fu coniato dal tardo latino Morus, che proviene da Maurus, "Mauro, abitante della Mauretania".
