Montreal

Montreal, or Montréal in French, (pronounced  in Canadian English, in Quebec French, and in European French) is the second-largest city in Canada and the largest city in the province of Quebec. Originally called Ville-Marie (literally 'City-Mary', translated 'Mary's City' or 'City of Mary'), the city takes its present name from the Mont Réal (as it was pronounced in Middle French , or Mont Royal "royal mountain" in present French), the three-head hill at the heart of the city, which was also initially given to the island on which the city stands.

Montréal est la ville la plus peuplée du Québec et la seconde agglomération canadienne après Toronto. Montréal constitue un centre majeur du commerce, de l’industrie, de la culture, de la finance et des affaires internationales. Montréal a accueilli l’exposition universelle de 1967, les Jeux olympiques d'été de 1976 et accueille chaque année, le Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, le Festival Juste Pour Rire, Montréal en Lumière et bien d'autres, ce qui fait connaître Montréal partout dans le monde.

Montreal (deutsch [] und englisch [] bzw. kanadisch englisch []) bzw. Montréal (französisch []) ist die zweitgrößte Stadt Kanadas und die größte Stadt der Provinz Québec. Zum Zeitpunkt der kanadischen Volkszählung im Jahr 2001 lebten 1.588.590 Menschen auf dem derzeitigen Stadtgebiet. Im Großraum Montreal leben etwa 3,7 Millionen Menschen (2006). Montreal liegt im Osten Kanadas am Sankt-Lorenz-Strom. Die Stadt ist 1600 km vom Atlantik entfernt und bietet mit dem Port de Montréal einen wichtigen Hafen für alle Schiffe auf dem Weg zu den Großen Seen. Der Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau-Flughafen der Stadt ist der größte der Provinz Québec und der drittgrößte Kanadas.

Montreal (fr. Montréal) – miasto w Kanadzie, nad Rzeką Świętego Wawrzyńca w prowincji Quebec. W latach 1844-1849 Montreal był stolicą Prowincji Kanady.Jest to drugie co do wielkości miasto Kanady, największy port morski wschodniej części kraju oraz główny ośrodek gospodarczy i kulturalny francuskojęzycznej części Kanady. Powstał jako niewielka osada francuska na cześć królewską nazwany Mont Royal - "Wzgórze królewskie" - stąd obecna nazwa. Liczba mieszkańców: 1,8 mln po amalgamacji z dzielnicami przedmiejskimi z 01.01 2002 (zespół miejski 3,5 mln, 2001). Miasto jest podzielone na 25 dzielnic (fr. arrondissements). Niektóre z tych dzielnic zostały przyłączone do Montrealu w 2001 roku na skutek prawa rządu prowincji Quebec. Wywołało to niesłychany sprzeciw i niektóre z tych dzielnic na skutek referendum najprawdopodobniej odseparują się od Montrealu w 2006 roku. Montreal zachowa jednak ponad 85% swojej obecnej populacji.

Essa è la più popolosa città della provincia del Québec, della quale è anche il più importante centro amministrativo ed economico. Montréal è anche la seconda città più popolosa del Paese. In francese viene detta la Métropole e la sua area metropolitana conta circa 3.600.000 abitanti .
