Montesquieu
Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu (; ; 18 January 168910 February 1755), generally referred to as simply Montesquieu, was a French social commentator and political thinker who lived during the Enlightenment. He is famous for his articulation of the theory of separation of powers, which is taken for granted in modern discussions of government and implemented in many constitutions throughout the world. He was largely responsible for the popularization of the terms feudalism and Byzantine Empire.

Charles-Louis de Secondat Montesquieu, baron de la Brède et de Montesquieu, född 18 januari 1689 på slottet La Brède, Gironde, död 10 februari 1755 i Paris, var en fransk friherre, politiker, författare, statsvetare och politisk filosof. Montesquieu är framför allt känd för att ha utvecklat maktdelningsprincipen och som representant för upplysningstidens tänkande.

Monteskiusz
Charles Louis de Secondat baron de la Brede et de Montesquieu, Karol, Ludwik Monteskiusz (ur. 18 stycznia 1689 w La Brède, zm. 10 lutego 1755 w Paryżu), francuski filozof, prawnik, wolnomularz i pisarz epoki Oświecenia.
Monteskiusz w Listach perskich (1721) poddał krytyce porządek panujący we Francji przed rewolucją, traktując ustrój państwowy Anglii jako wzorzec do naśladowania. Monteskiusz wyszedł od koncepcji prawa naturalnego, wywodząc (w niezgodzie z Hobbesem), że prawo stanowione zostało ustanowione dla poskromienia dzikości natury. Przy tworzeniu prawa należy brać pod uwagę naturalne uwarunkowania, które kształtują ducha praw. Do tych uwarunkowań należą: wielkość terytorium państwa, klimat, religia, obyczaje, historia, formy gospodarowania oraz zasady rządzenia. Monteskiusz wyróżnił trzy formy państwa:
- despotia, w której zasadą rządzenia jest strach,
- monarchia, w której rządy odwołują się do honoru,
- republika, która może mieć ustrój demokratyczny (oparta jest wtedy na cnocie) albo arystokratyczny (oparta wtedy na umiarkowaniu warstw rządzących).
