Monocoque

Monocoque (French for "single" (mono) and "shell" (coque)) is a construction technique that supports structural load using an object's external skin. This stands in contrast with using an internal framework (or truss) that is then covered with a non-load-bearing skin. Monocoque construction was first widely used in aircraft, starting in the 1930s.

Ein Monocoque (frz.) ist eine in einschaliger Bauweise gefertigte tragende Struktur eines Fahrzeugs. Dabei nimmt die weitgehend geschlossene Außenhaut die meisten angreifenden Kräfte auf. Monocoques sind leicht und verwindungssteif, jedoch aufwendig zu fertigen.

Een Monocoque is een constructie waarbij de huid van het object het gewicht draagt van de constructie, dit in tegenstelling tot een frame of chassis waarop een niet dragende beplating wordt geplaatst.Deze techniek werd in de jaren '30 voor het eerst toegepast in de vliegtuigindustrie, niet lang daarna ook in de autoconstructie, zoals de Citroën Traction Avant.
